editTips and Tricks

Below are 10 tips and tricks on how to write endearing romance.

  1. Ensure that the promise of what is to come keeps the reader interested – it’s not just about the happy ending, but also all of the events leading up to it.

  2. It is important to ensure that the ending is a happy one; otherwise readers will feel cheated.

  3. When writing a hero, it is important that he is able to sweep not only the heroine off her feet, but also the readers off theirs.

  4. When writing a heroine, she should be strong and someone who the reader can respect.

  5. It is okay to include other things in the plot of the story; however, the romance should be the main focus.

  6. Romance novels should be treated just like any other novel when it comes to character development – the character should show development throughout the story.

  7. Each character should have their own backstory and personality that impacts how they act in relationships (e.g., friendships, romantic relationships).

  8. Characters should have their own flaws – perfect characters can make the story feel superficial.

  9. If the story is just all rainbows and butterflies, without any conflict, then the reader can lose interest – it is important to write believable obstacles.

  10. When writing, avoid cliché characters and overused plots – come up with something new and fresh.
